Math iReady testing on Tuesday, Sept. 30
The most important thing we can do is prepare students and motivate them to put forth their best effort during the test. To help prepare your child for the i-Ready Diagnostic, encourage them to do the following:
● Get a good night's sleep and eat a full breakfast on the day(s) of the assessment.
● Try their best on each question and try not to rush.
● Try not to worry about questions they do not know
Please ask your child if he/she has a pair of working heaphones/earbuds at school. We use them all year long and they need to be kept in school.
Homework:
Nature Center Field Trip Permission letter came home on Thursday, September 11 and is due on Monday, September 15 or ASAP. There is no cost for the field trip! Please ask your child to share the letter with you!
Language Arts:
3rd Grade Reading: 20+ minutes every night
4th Grade Reading: 30+ minutes every night
*PLEASE HAVE YOUR CHILD BRING IN A FEW CHAPTER BOOKS FOR OUR DAILY FREE READING TIME!
Spelling:
List 3 Test Week of September 22: Short and Long i Vowel Patterns: i, igh, long i with silent e
Each week your child will write the week's words in his/her planner. Ask your child to share the spelling list with you. This list can also be printed from PowerSpelling. We will have a weekly spelling test in class on Monday (Parkin) or Thursday (Butzin). Kids have an option to practice their words by playing the spelling games on PowerSpelling. They have logins taped to the insides of their planners. Please show your weekly spelling test score to your parents in Powerspelling- Click Scores/Results.
Math
3rd Grade:
Thank you for enrolling your child in XtraMath.org. The flyer with instructions on how to enroll was sent home with your child in their Take Home folder. If you need another flyer, please email/notify Mrs. Parkin.
3rd-grade students - Please practice 3 times per week. Keep going until "Mr. C says, you're done!" It should take approx. 10 minutes
We are currently working in Unit 1. Students interpret and represent data on picture graphs and scaled bar graphs, and solve one and two-step word problems using the data. The use of scaled graphs and contexts with equal groups serves as a foundation for later units on multiplication.
4th Grade:
Students brought home an OPTIONAL additional practice problem packet on Friday, September 19. I explained to the students that optional means that a parent decides if it should be completed.

Practice * / math facts for 10+ minutes each day!
In class, we have a goal of completing one "Fluency Flight" a day in our math iReady program. If your child misses a day of school, please ask him/her to complete this at home. It takes about 10 minutes.
We are currently in our Unit 1 study. Students explore the concepts of factors and multiples in depth, as well as prime and composite numbers. We also are making meaningful connections to geometry by examining how this understanding helps us calculate the area of rectangles.
Social Studies
Postcard - Favorite Place in MI - due Monday, Sept 22nd
Last week's directions:
As part of our introduction to this year’s Social Studies curriculum, which focuses on the state of Michigan, your child brought home a postcard letter last week. We’re asking each student to share their favorite place in Michigan! We would love to have this turned in by Monday, September 22nd These will be shared and displayed as we begin exploring all the wonderful places that make Michigan special!
Have a conversation with your child about their favorite place in Michigan.
Find a picture of that place. You’re welcome to print it at home and attach it to the worksheet. If you’re unable to print at home, feel free to email the picture to me, and I’ll be happy to print it for you.
Have your child write a few sentences about why this place is their favorite.
